About

Agro-Ecological Systems Design, Consultancy, & Education

Agroecosystems Design is a team of international educators, farmers, consultants, ethno-ecologists, and resilient system designers who have worked with smallholder farmers, communities and community-based organizations, NPOs, policy makers, and children and school-groups on regenerative land-use practices and agro-ecological design and ethics.

Especially in an international development and aid context, we have on-the-ground experience in arid, degraded, and water scarce regions, having dealt with extremes that are increasing around the globe. We work collaboratively with communities and small-holder farmers to regenerate degraded landscapes, while increasing food security, nutrition, and resilience.

We have trained and empowered countless people from all ages and walks of life and from around the world to reconnect to the natural world, and proactively contribute to ethical, ecological, and social solutions.

About
Why Naturopathy

Why agro-ecosystems design?

The inter-dependent co-evolution of Life teaches us that no organism (or element, component) can survive much less thrive in isolation. We cannot regenerate and restore our environment ecologically without also empowering people and communities to reconnect to each other ethically and they are able to revive and freely embody their bio-regionally specific land-based cultures. In other words, environmental health and ecosystem functionality is necessarily tied to just, healthy, and functioning societies with all their physical and social structures, values, and cultural diverse land-use practices, and with the freedom and independence to steward said environment.

We have the skills, technologies, and the ecological knowledge to overcome nature-deficit disorder and the 'diseases of civilization' by reconnecting communities to the land and environment they inhabit and that provides for them. We can design both our social and physical structures to be life-giving and creative forces rather than destructive and erosive, ensuring our perennial integration into the broader landscape, watershed, and bioregion, protecting and enhancing biological and cultural diversity, and increasing human and agro-ecosystem health.

As mimickers of natural patterns and cycles, as followers of ecological laws and reciprocity, we seek to re-align ourselves, our societies, our economies, our soil- and land-use practices, our water and energy needs, our buildings and industries, our cultures and stories, and our settlements with a regenerative, perennial, and ecological vision of the future.

From the micro-biome in our guts responsible for our immune system and psychological health to the microorganisms in the soil making nutrients bio-available for us, the complex web of Life urges us to re-think, or rather to re-member the foundation on which our societies are built:

Soil and Water.

Water

The redesign of our land-use practices to ensure resilient water management strategies to rehydrate the landscape and recharge groundwater

Biodiversity

Diversity of crops, microorganisms, birds, etc. all contribute to and facilitate a healthy ecology and a resilient society/community

Agro-Ecosystem and Human Health

The health of the soil, the nutrient-density of food crops, the resilience of food-growing systems, markets, and community, the eradication of petro-chemical fertilizers and herbicide/pesticide dependency, etc. all interdependently play key roles in human and environmental health and resilience.

Soil

An unfathomable diversity of Soil microorganisms are responsible for our vital global hydrological and nutrient (e.g. carbon) cycles, and for making nutrients even bio-available for our consumption and nourishment.  Our immune system, our physical and mental health in turn are dependent on those related microorganisms in our gut

Cultural Diversity

Cultural diversity, a variety of different ways of knowing and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) are essential for innovative, appropriate, and resilient systems

Resilience Design

Combining ecology, ethics, and creativity we can redesign our human settlements and land-use practices  to truly contribute and empower life-giving and flourishing systems.

Bio-Cultural Regeneration

Underlying all our work, is the regeneration and healing of degraded landscapes and watersheds, and necessarily of the correlating cultural practices essential for the health and continuation of biodiversity and ecology.
